Sometimes we have clients who get confused as to why artists may require a consultation appointment before we are able to schedule your actual tattoo appointment. Hopefully this article will better help you understand why.
Most tattoo artists will want you to stop into the studio for an in person consultation, and this is so they can make sure they are going to draw up exactly what it is you are looking for. If we try to do a consultation over the phone or email, there is a lot of room for miscommunication and error in the drawing. Over the internet or over the phone, it is impossible to tell exactly what size you want your tattoo, and sometimes the size you wish to have, might be too small to support the design you want. It is also impossible to tell what the condition of skin in the area you have, and how well the tattoo will work on that area without seeing it in person. If you are looking to do a cover-up tattoo, then we will need to see the tattoo in person to determine if there is a way to cover it, and what will work best to cover it. When you have an in person consultation, you also get the luxury to add or change things to your design while talking with the artist so the changes can be made quickly and easily. If you have ideas for change that won’t work with the design, the artist will be able to let you know why those changes won’t work, and show you why.
Doing an in person consultation will save you and your artist a lot of time when it comes to getting the point across for the design you would like. It always helps to bring in reference photos of art you like to help show the artists what your style and concept is for your tattoo. Know that we will use this as reference, and draw something personal.
So the next time you are thinking about getting a new tattoo, before you send that email, just shoot us a call and get yourself set up with a free consultation with any artist you would like!
